Elisabeth Shue was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on October 6, 1963. She is the daughter of a mother who was a vice president of a travel company and a father who was a patent lawyer. She has four siblings.

Shue was educated at private schools, graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1981. She then studied economics at Harvard University, graduating in 1985.
